In this part of our Series on Cimate Change in Smaller Cities, we delve into how climate change exacerbates air pollution through mechanisms such as the formation of ground-level ozone and increased particulate matter, particularly in small and mid-sized cities in India. It highlights the alarming PM2.5 levels in these urban areas, the health impacts, the inadequacies in air quality monitoring systems and other gaps where smaller cities fall short in terms of resources and policy implementation. We also discuss the National Clean Air Programme's efforts, the importance of localised actions, and present a case study on Bhiwadi, an industrial town facing severe air pollution challenges.
